Ode to a summer’s bike ride…

Our love of vintage-styled cycling has taken us on many an odd journey this past few years, both geographically and ‘virtually’, and we’ve spent way too many hours doing ‘research’ in front of a screen when we should have been out on two wheels.  The upside, however,  has been the sheer volume of bike-minded souls we have come across and a wealth of inspiring material.

Here’s one such find… and we think it captures the spirit of Beg whole-heartedly.    Ahhhhh… nothing like a bit of Betjeman for evoking summer evenings, suburbia, English churches and tennis tournaments on grass courts. This ones a bit, ummm, cheeky too… you fortunate bicycle!

Myfanwy

Kind o’er the kinderbank leans my Myfanwy,
White o’er the playpen the sheen of her dress,
Fresh from the bathroom and soft in the nursery
Soap scented fingers I long to caress.

Were you a prefect and head of your dormit’ry?
Were you a hockey girl, tennis or gym?
Who was your favourite? Who had a crush on you?
Which were the baths where they taught you to swim?

Smooth down the Avenue glitters the bicycle,
Black-stockinged legs under navy blue serge,
Home and Colonial, Star, International,
Balancing bicycle leant on the verge.

Trace me your wheel-tracks, you fortunate bicycle,
Out of the shopping and into the dark,
Back down the avenue, back to the potting shed,
Back to the house on the fringe of the park.

Golden the light on the locks of Myfanwy,
Golden the light on the book on her knee,
Finger marked pages of Rackham’s Hans Anderson,
Time for the children to come down to tea.

Oh! Fullers angel-cake, Robertson’s marmalade,
Liberty lampshade, come shine on us all,
My! what a spread for the friends of Myfanwy,
Some in the alcove and some in the hall.

Then what sardines in half-lighted passages!
Locking of fingers in long hide-and-seek.
You will protect me, my silken Myfanwy,
Ring leader, tom-boy, and chum to the weak.

Country Living… in Islington

March 29, 2011 in Bicycles, Cycling Accessories, Enjoy the ride, Press, Test Ride

So after all our months of planning, we finally got the chance to show our bicycles to a few of you at the Beg launch at the Country Living Spring Fair in Islington last week.  Well, 25, 500 people to be precise.  And boy, what a welcome we received.   It was amazing to hear all the cooing over the bicycles and we even had a tear… not because the saddle was too high and it was painful, I hasten to add, but from a former District Nurse, who used to do her patient rounds on her beloved Sit Up and Beg bicycle!   We got to hear some fabulous stories of people’s first bicycles, the excitement of unwrapping a new bicycle for Christmas and some incredible bicycles adventures people have had.   We’re most excited about the sheer buzz there seems to be amongst women, in particular, who are keen to get back in the saddle and take to two wheels again.

All we REALLY needed was a velodrome for some test cycling (Health and Safety boringly prevented us from allowing people to have a bit of a pedal!) and I’m confident that there would have been a few bicycles riding off into the Islington sunset if we hadn’t kept a close eye on them!

We’re now really looking forward to seeing our new Beg bicyclists out and about enjoying their Bellas and Bettys, not to mention all the Old School Satchels that are gracing our streets.  Thank you, lovely customers!

Capturing the mood…

March 17, 2011 in Bicycles

Wow…!  We’ve made it!  We are out there and LIVE!

BEG Bicycles are on the road!

If there is one single thing that captures the vibe of the last few months here at BEG, that bittersweet journey of starting up a brand new brand, with all its exhausting and exhilarating up and downs (mainly ups, we hasten to add), we’d say it is this gorgeous little video from the adorable Charlie Winston…

It’s jam packed full of everything we love… retro bicycles (kind of goes without saying), super-glam French actresses looking the bee’s knees in black socks (yes, really)  and sandals (a look reminiscent of your Dad but on Audrey, another matter), acres of stunning Spanish scenery and the obligatory dusty, battered old bus.

Not forgetting Charlie, of course.

Oh – and check out that vintage picnic rug that Charlie so generously uses as a cushion to soften the ride for Audrey.  Want one of those?  We know just where to get one!

Pedal into Spring…

March 17, 2011 in Bicycles, Test Ride

We’re SO busy (and to say crazed with excitement would be an understatement) with last minute preparations for our big launch at the Country Living Spring Fair next week in Islington.  It’s the first time we’ll have the opportunity to show off the bicycles AND the accessory collection to the public (27, 000 people, ye gads!) and we can’t wait to see people’s reaction.

We’ve got an incredible location for our stand… it’s on the charmingly named ‘Village Green’ (which is kind of creative given that its an exhibition hall in Islington, but then Islingtonites like to think of their little patch as The Village so suppose it’s true) and is adjacent to the central show garden, so have decided if it all gets a bit much and we are inundated with super-keen bicycle shoppers, I’ll nip round the back of the stand and borrow the hammock for 40 winks.

We’re going to do a special BEG introductory offer to celebrate our launch – 10% off everything in the Beg collection, including the entire bicycle range for all orders placed at the Country Living Spring Fair.  Do come and see us!
