Back to BEG Bicycles

January 24, 2012 in Bicycle inspiration, Bicycles, Bike Candy

Sundays evenings are always a bit of a double-edged sword.  Desperately clinging to the last remnants of the week-end whilst luxuriating in those final few heavenly hours of freedom.  That must be why Sunday night comfort TV is so important… and we’re certainly getting our fill of bike-candy at the moment, thanks to BBC1′s Call the Midwife!  Pristine midwives in starchy uniforms pedalling furiously through grimy east end back streets on fabulous sit up and beg bicycles.  Oh –  the week is too long.  Bring on next Sunday!

PS Is the bicycle in the last image a Phillips, vintage-bicycle gurus?

Not so blue, Bikeyface!

January 18, 2012 in Bicycle inspiration, Sites we like...

So this week we lived through Blue Monday – Monday 16th January and the day ‘officially’ dubbed the most depressing day of the year (that’s got to be a UK thing, right… somehow can’t imagine that anyone sitting on a beach in the Maldives right now is feeling that down).  If that is the case, and you’re feeling rather gloomy , we introduce you to Bikeyface; the perfect January antidote.

We are huge fans of Bikeyface at Beg Bicycles and await each new installment like children waiting for the latest copy of the Beano to arrive at the papershop!  Devised and illustrated by Bekka, a cycle commuter in Boston, every single ‘toon is a super-dry, brilliantly-observed and seriously laugh-out-loud take on the nitty gritty of urban daily cycling.  Here are a few recent ones that we have absolutely loved… (but do look at, or better still subscribe to, Bikeyface – this is just the tip of a genius iceberg!).

On a positive note though, just think what a lot we have to look forward to once January is behind us;

1.  The nights are getting lighter – and, with a little bit of imagination, there is almost a Spring-like quality to the evenings.

2.  2012 is going to be The Summer of Cycling.  A short nomenclature, but oh-so full of promise!!!  More on that later…

3.  We’re getting some very lovely NEW Spring Summer 2012 cycling accessories in soon… so you may have to treat yourself and your trusty wheels to a little something.  Retail therapy always rocks, right?

Happy New January Joy Ride

January 13, 2012 in Bicycles

Esther’s got a great, wintery ride lined up for January, involving the goes-without-saying-and-requisite tea-break.  Over to Esther…  Oh and can we say, it involves a Teacake (cue gratuitous image of our favourite all time teatime treat!)

A little glimmer of enjoyment in the winter gloom is (ta dah!) the January Joy Ride!

If, like me, you’ve rather over-done Christmas, here’s the chance to get back on your bike and into the fresh air. As we’ve had a bit of a break, we’ll be take it easy…  and still over-indulge on tea and cake at the end of the ride!

So, the January Joy Ride is on Sunday 29 January.  We’ll meet at 10.30am at Shepreth Train Station.  We’ll then do a circular route from Shepreth through the lovely wintry landscape and finish back in picturesque Shepreth where we’ll decamp to the newly opened Teacake tea room (which is housed in a 16th century thatched cottage, complete with beamed ceilings and inglenook fireplaces so should be gorgeous!).

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday 29 January!

What better way to gently ease into 2012?

Thanks Esther!  Just found this image though.  Let it be a warning NOT to eat too many teacakes in Teacake or you’ll look like this chap on the ride home!

Christmas with Betty

Happy New Year to everyone!

As you can see, we’ve been having a bit of fun over the holidays on this lovely  3 speed porter’s bicycle, Betty (in Chalk) who was looking resplendent all dressed up with our willow Grocer’s Basket.  We’re quite taken with the colour of that old postbox too…
